Windows to Heaven: Treasures from the Museum of Russian Icons
Windows to Heaven:
A look into eternity-that’s what museum visitors will experience as they walk through Windows to Heaven. This exhibition brings together a grouping of historically significant Russian Icons dating from 1590 to the present. St. Nicholas and St. George, Old Testament scenes, pictorial themes centered on the life of Jesus, and images of the Mother of God are well represented in this collection from the Museum of Russian Icons.
The exhibition content will address the historical background in which these icons were created, the definition of an icon, the historical process involved with creating icons, including the 21st Century process, and the historical background of systematic destruction of holy images also know as iconoclasm. Russian history and culture will be interwoven throughout the exhibition. Maps, supplemental materials and educational materials will be included.
